Regret is the reason why we'd all love a good time machine.
We hang onto goals, ideas, and failed plans like they are old coins. Unfortunately, the coins of regret are worthless. While the mementos of "could've been a contender" stories makes for great bar conversations, it shouldn't be your strategy when it comes to learning how to dance.
Disclaimer - this is tough love. You know, the preferred method of communication anytime you've been stuck in a rut, avoiding things that could be great for you.
1. Because faking your way through a Father-Daughter dance is about as special as faking your way through paying for the wedding.
2. Because your online dating profile doesn't exactly trend in the right direction when you say you love watching TV and working a lot.
3. Because you put your "You-Time" on layaway during school and work, and now it's time to make up for lost time.
4. Because no one at the Office wants to see your version of the Elaine dance ever again.
5. Because if your New Year's resolutions could talk, they'd say "see you again same time next year?"
6. Because going to the gym reminds you of P.E. class in high school, and you'd prefer a more enjoyable alternative.
7. Because you've faked tying your shoelaces, faked a bathroom break, and walked laps around too many dance floors.
8. Because your high school reunion is coming up, and that's the closest alternative to a time machine makeover you can think of.
9. Because you are committed to relaunching your personal brand (aka "social life").
10. Because your comfort zone has won too many battles, and now it's time for a rebellion.
11. Because your cubicle walls are dead spots for your happiness data plan.
12. Because your ex thinks you don't have it in you.
13. Because your inner critic doesn't think you have it in you.
14. Because spring is around the corner.
15. Because summer is around the next one.
16. Because it's never too early to prepare for your office party.
17. Because the fall is when everyone goes back to school, even for dancing.
18. Because your outdoor hobbies are tough to do in the winter.
19. Because waiting will not be something to brag about when you get older. Waiting will make you regret. Your bar stories are entertaining at first, but the longer they go on - they more sad they start to sound. Regret truly is the worst. The pain of hard work, of an uncomfortable situation, of fear walking through the door is nothing in comparison to regret.
20. Because no one, in the 105 year history of Arthur Murray, has ever said "I'm so glad I waited this long to get started."
