Some details can get left out when you're planning a wedding. After all, it's not like you do this all the time.
When it comes to your wedding dance, there are important details you'll want to consider, and we hope you don't leave these out now that your big day is on the calendar.
6 Critical Wedding Dance Facts
1. It should be 90 Seconds
90 Seconds is the maximum. That's it, end of story. Your teacher's professional performances go a maximum of 90 seconds, and their teacher's performances were the same.
Tip: Starting early will put your choreography into long term, muscle memory, instead of short term, "wedding memory".
2. There will be an Encore
Want to get called out as a dance fraud by the amateur dance judging panel which is your wedding party? Nothing says "we barely survived" more than turning your friends and family down to get the dance party started at your reception. With a little extra time, and a few minutes away from your wedding choreography, you can have all the essential survival skills to look like seasoned wedding dancers - from the first, to the last dance.
3. In Laws Want Their Piece of the Action
The last person you want to dance poorly with, or decline altogether, is an in-law. After your fantastic (90 second) routine, they'll also be expecting a celebratory dance with the bride and groom. Don't let them down, there will be plenty of chances for that when you start skipping one of their homes every other year for the holidays.
Tip: Foxtrot is your Get out of In-Law Dance Jail Free Card. It's easy, sophisticated, but not too stuffy.
4. Nothing From Your Wedding Should Be Copied from YouTube
Sure, you can get inspired by stuff you see on YouTube, Pinterest, or the Knot, but ultimately, your wedding should be unique. That same rule applies to your wedding dance. You'd never copy someone's vows from a YouTube video, and for the love of matrimony, don't do that with your wedding dance either.
5. Make the Investment
Weddings have many big ticket items that are quickly discarded after the wedding: leftover food, cake, or rented party decorations. Your dancing is something that you can keep for far longer. Yes, there is a cost to dance lessons, but dancing will return dividends far after your wedding is over. So unless your chef is offering served appetizers after your wedding day, your dancing, the ring, your dress, and the pictures will live on long after everything else.
6. A Dance Partner is a Perfectly Acceptable Wedding Gift
If your fiance whispered in your ear that as a wedding gift they wanted to be your dance partner, would that be a horrible gift? Seem weird? A little off the beaten path? That's because it's unique, extraordinary, and it's the sort of thing the top 1% of couples do together. You know, instead of choosing to connect by binge watching a season or two of some show, they go out dancing. Yes, dancing together is fantastic for your wedding, but the best couples take the important parts of their wedding and live them through their marriage.
Even dancing together.
